MENTORING: What is it and how can it benefit you ?

A mentor is an experienced person who advises and helps somebody with less experience over a period of time. The process of mentoring involves regular and meaningful meetings that involve the exchange of support, advice, encouragement, and skills development.

The Works 4 Youth skills and employability mentors meet regularly with participants, building positive and supportive relationships. Motivating, informing, creating action plans and providing feedback, to encourage participants to identify and achieve their goals. Our experienced mentors have a wealth of knowledge about employment, training and education opportunities in our local area, which enables them to provide suitable information, advice and guidance.

They can help you to find jobs, apprenticeships, training courses, refer you to other services and provide you with relevant information and support.

How can it benefit you?

Having a mentor or role model can lead to:

Increased self-confidence

Increased self-awareness

Increased capacity to self-reflect

Improved goal-setting skills

Improved communication skills

Exposure to new and different perspectives

Having another person supporting and advocating for you can make a huge difference and help with motivation and mindset, which is really important when making decisions about future goals and achieving them.

“A mentor is someone who allows you to see the hope inside yourself” – Oprah Winfrey

FEEDBACK FROM PARTICIPANTS:

“Do it.  If you don’t think you can do it on your own then you should apply and they will help you.  It’s a good support system.”

“My mentor has help me get out of the house more, learn to talk for myself and basically talk to others more confidently.”

“Sometimes talking to your friends isn’t helpful, but someone a bit more, you know, detached, like a mentor, means you can talk more freely. It’s helpful.”

“I just would like to say thank you to everyone. Everyone I have met from Works4Youth has been really lovely and supportive. You all do a really great job, and I honestly don’t think I would have had the courage or confidence to apply for jobs if I hadn’t joined the service. The service has definitely had a very positive impact on me, and I can’t thank my mentor and everyone at Works4Youth enough.”
